One of my daily creative works (I've been good at making things, lax at posting). This is a late, late night piece based primarily on Hang Drum & A deep, deep humm, spruced with a little harp. The title is old irish, and means (approximately) 'the day at the end of summer'.

On the mastering side, I left it left deliberately open and uncompressed - time to bring dynamics back into music.

A decade later and it appears to take the same recovery time for one night of very little dancing, and an almost reasonable amount of sleep. Oh well, at least it was a fun weekend, and the recovery days were filled with an uncountable number of Deep Space Nine episodes. I can think of worse ways to start the week.

Well, I've just surfaced after that long stint of animation to find a note from Ms B, along the lines of 'nice work, except for the typo in the credits'.

It just goes to show how the word part of my brain gets switched off when I'm working with pictures. It took me longer to put that crappy end frame together than it did to do some of the neat compositing magic, and I still end up with a typo my tired, art-addled brain ignored, but I would normally pick up on in a frakking instant. This is why I need my wife - she's a great proof reader, and a bit of a perfectionist. I don't mind the rough edges so much. I love the first 80% that taks 20% of the time, and I'm not so keen on the last 20% polishing that takes 80% of the time. I'm usually too impatient and want to get on to the next cool thing in my little world.

This shows some early avatar development, with 3D sculpts of Ms Behaviour and myself, plonked on to robot bodies, with the strength of ten gorillas. Next stop is ZBrush for some serious modelling and adding of complexity. The plan is to generate low polygon avatars with high polygon normal maps that can be animated in real time by machinima software running on kick-ass gaming hardware. The result, especially if I can get face robot set up (which generates different normal maps for each face position), should be million polygon models in near photo-real environments all running in realtime. This will be our studio, lights and camera free, but ready for plenty of action.

If any of the terms I use are confusing, wikipedia will probably fill you in nicely. If I'm to stand any chance of making this a successful back-end report from the development of the show, I can't get *too* hung up on explaining professional terms. I'll do the explainitory stuff within the show, not here in my production blog. If you're into machinima, 3d graphics, motion compositing, camera matching etc you have come to the right place, as I will be explaining all of my quick-turnaround production secrets over the course of the coming season.

Also expect many 'lack of sleep' complaints. If I complain too much, remind me that I can sleep when I'm dead, or season one finishes, whichever comes first.
